So Your Mattress Sucks

You’ve finally had it. You’ve been tossing and turning and you’re fed up—why else would you turn to the internet to vent your bedtime burdens? If it’s any source of comfort, you aren’t alone, and help is closer than you might think.
Around here, we’ve got a name for the mattresses that haunt our nightmares: Sad Matts.
Sad Matt didn’t start off bad, really. They just ended up there and now you’re trapped, looking for a way out. We don’t blame you, you need support and they just can’t make it happen. And your slowly stewing anger isn’t doing anything for them, either.
There are a few key steps to take before you’re ready to ditch your Sad Matt.
Identifying The Issues Every relationship has it’s problems, but clearly you and your mattress have some things to talk about. Paying attention to the problems that caused you to fall out of love will help you find the right mattress that fits exactly what you need.
Are you waking up in pain from the valley forming in the middle of your Sad Matt? Maybe your mattress is causing you to wake up in a sweaty mess because it doesn’t breathe. Is the lumpy, uneven support keeping you up at night?
Make a list of the things that aren’t working out and start looking for mattresses that address those concerns. Once you know what needs to be fixed, you’re well on your way to better sleep and brighter mornings.
Finding Someone New This can be the toughest part of all. It’s been so long since you’ve been in the mattress shopping scene…
There are a lot of mattresses out there and you should definitely play the field to get a better idea of what you’ve been missing. Maybe you’re a memory foam person, or an organic wool kind of sleeper. The possibilities are endless, but we can help make it a little easier. The most important thing is that you put yourself out there, live a little, and don’t be afraid of finding The One.
Breaking It Off Once you’ve found the right mattress, you have to have “The Talk.” It can be daunting, even a little miserable, but let’s face it, you both know things have run their course. When it comes down to it, dragging it out only hurts you both in the end.
Some quick tips:
- Waiting will only make it worse. Kick your Sad Matt to the curb sooner rather than later, no one wants to deal with squatter’s rights.
- Your Sad Matt likely already knows what’s coming, no need for veiled euphemisms or ambiguous conversations. Just give it to them straight.
- Getting great sleep really helps the healing process. (For the record, so does ice cream.)
Once you’ve ripped off the sheets, so to speak, you can begin your new life and you’ll both move on. Well, maybe just you will.
